Scarf →
Winter is cold where we live. This is how to wear a scarf. Fold it in half lengthways. Put it around your neck, keeping hold of the looped end. Thread the two loose ends together through the loop and tighten comfortably.

Quicksilver beta 57 released, not dead yet →
Just in time for my new computer! My reliance in Quicksilver has come to a point where, if it (or Launchy, in the case of a PC) is not installed on the machine I’m using, I feel like I’m missing a limb.  Or need an extra one. Quicksilver for life.

"Tenured to a life that happened to you"
Richard Russo: About ten years ago I was teaching at a large Midwestern university while I waited for the opportunity to teach at a small, eastern liberal arts college, which came in due course. One Friday night my wife and I went to a party given by one of my graduate students in a house that, if it had been a car, would have been a Studebaker up on blocks. The keg had run dry half an hour...

National Geographic's International Photography... →
Forgot to queue this up last week.  The Big Picture samples the entries / winners. It feels a bit strange that I can actually pick out some of the names of the photographers. Finally: “queue” is a really awkward word.

The Genius of Horton
From Obsidian Wings: The genius of Horton lies in what it says about the limits of empiricism and the dangers of mob rule. No one in the mob is on Horton’s side until the Whos prove their existence to the mob’s satisfaction. Until then, every character in the book is against Horton and the Whos. This is aptly summed up by the little kangaroo’s repeated refrain of “Me...
